The Scottish Hypothetical

The Scottish Right poses an interesting hypothetical to readers:

If the Democrats were presented with the following two options, which would they choose?

The United States triumphs in Iraq over the next two years and President George W. Bush serves a third term.

 OR

The United States suffers a dramatic setback in Iraq within the next year and is forced to withdraw in utter humiliation.  Following the withdrawal, President George W. Bush is immediately impeached by the House and removed from office by the Senate.

Well, I’d say there’d be a party split on that one, but not down the middle.  The more centered Democrats like Joe Lieberman would opt for choice one: victory and re-election.  Lieberman’s a man who understands that the two-party system is in place for a healthy political debate and to reduce corruption.  Most Democrats and a fair number of Republicans tend to think it’s a competition and their favorite team needs to win at any cost.  It’d be nice if someone could remind them their team is “America” without having the dogmatic “you calling me un-American” immediately tossed back.

I believe you’d see around two-thirds of Democrats pay lipservice to choice one and then strategize heavily on choice two, hoping against hope they could regain some credibility in the eyes of the center by toppling Bush.

Of course, you’ll never get a choice two Democrat to answer this question.  They’ll point out that Bush can’t be re-elected by law, make a joke about how he’ll bend the law, then foam at the mouth a while when they remember we’re surging troops.  They’re not interested in dialogue unless it’s idealogue dialogue.
