What’s Wrong With Europe?
Tuesday, June 5, 2007
The prolific posting Instapundit sends us over to Pajamas Media this morn to take a gander at all that’s wrong with Europe. What’s going on with the continent that birthed the genius of the Maginot Line, the Nazi Party, and concentration camps (a British invention doncha know)?
From Claire Berlinski at Pajamas Media:
The problems I described—Europe’s collapse of confidence, the unsustainable character of its welfare economies, its population decline, the rise of militant Islam, and the flourishing in Europe of a host of bizarre anti-Enlightenment ideologies—are now widely appreciated.
While Claire gives some valid points as to why Europe is in a bit of hot water, I must add my voice to the growing chorus of Euro-doomers and get right down to brass tacks. True believers, Europe’s problem is its superheroes! You’re probably thinking this some sort of flight of frivolity on my part but I assure you, once you see the proof for yourselves you will go blind from the shining purity of universal truth!
I give you, Captain Euro:
Aside from his ridiculous costume consisting of jumpsuit and Polish train conductor hat, Captain Euro has superpowers on par with the lameness of Aquaman. From the Captain Euro web site:
Captain Euro has taken a difficult vow: “To use, wherever possible, intellect, culture and logic - not violence - to take control of difficult criminal situations.” Captain Euro is a diplomatic hero - the symbol of European unity and values.
Unless Captain Euro means he’ll be using intellect boomerangs, culture grenades, or logic bombs, I don’t think the criminals are going to be swayed into arresting themselves. But Captain Euro, of course, will remain undaunted (and a lot of other un’s such as unsuccessful in crime fighting, uninteresting as a character, unrealistic in any way, shape or form).
How’s your diplomacy working on international terrorism, Cap? Does your mastery of several languages assist you there? Lastly, how do you combat the culture of Islamo-fascism when the very purpose of the movement is to suppress, conquer, and rule through fear all other cultures?
Alas, reason and reality appear to be the kryptonite of Captain Euro.
